TSC Secretary suspended

Teaching Service Commission (TSC) Secretary, Sergio Thomas, was suspended from service yesterday following his involvement in an accident over the weekend.

It is alleged that sometime in the early hours of Sunday May 13, Thomas, was caught driving the White double cabin Toyota Hilux belonging to Lycee Louis Antoine de Bouganville, after official working hours and without proper authorisation.

Martin Mahe, the Chairman of Public Service Commission (PSC) confirmed with Daily Post yesterday afternoon that Mr. Thomas has been suspended on half pay.

His suspension is effective as of May 15, 2018.

Thomas was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while driving and involved in the accident somewhere at Malapoa area, which caused the vehicle to sustain major damages.

The suspension letter issued by the PSC stated, “It was alleged that you were negligent and careless in properly handling the vehicle which was under your control at that time as you were over-speeding.

“It was alleged that your improper conduct has brought the attention of the social media and put PSC into disrepute.”

Chairman Mahe confirmed that a full Disciplinary Report will be prepared on this matter and provided to the suspended Secretary for his consideration and response shortly.

“Until the above matter is resolved, you are suspended from duty and you must not enter any premises belonging to this Department except with my permission.

“You are required to return all Public Service property in your possession to me immediately. You are also required to return all office or vehicle keys.”

Meanwhile, the case officer within the Traffic Unit confirmed police are currently investigating the accident.

He conveyed to Daily Post that he arrived at the accident scene approximately five minutes after the accident, but the driver and passenger had already fled the scene.

The case officer confirmed he saw an alcoholic beverage can in the vehicle.

He also confirmed he would be laying two possible charges under the Traffic Act against Thomas.

The pending charges include driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving.

Thomas is expected to be cautioned by police shortly.
